Early college awareness: Closing the gap
Think College Early
Dear Business/Community Leader:
Recent studies have shown that only 50% of today’s African Americans will graduate with a high school diploma. According to the most recent statistics, the nationwide college graduation rate for black students stands at an appallingly low rate of 42 percent. It's even more alarming when it comes to our black men for whom the graduation rate is only about 34%.
In a concerted effort to improve these statistics, Building Leaders of Tomorrow, Inc. in partnership with The Poet's Athletics Club, Inc., (Poet's A.C.), a local community based non-profit organization (501(c)3 founded more than 25 years ago, is on a crusade to get kids to think about college early, the moment they enter middle school...get them excited about going to college by giving them a broad college experience that will encourage them to stay focused throughout high school.
We want to join forces with parents, families, schools, community organizations, business leaders and higher education institutions to help students become aware of the increased opportunities that a college education offers. We can each play a role in providing our students with the support and help that will ultimately strengthen our workforce and our society.
Currently, our organization is planning a college awareness tour to some of the most revered Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) from Baltimore to Atlanta during the spring break of 2010 as well as a visit to the White House. Our goal is to engage at least 100 students, particularly those whose economic status, resulting lack of information and expectation, rather than their capacity for knowledge, too often prevent them from realizing the benefits of higher education.
We're asking your organization to join us in this fight by making a tax deductible donation to support our cause. By sponsoring a child, you will directly help a child in need and provide outreach to the community. In return, your organization will garner support for its products and/or services within the community, thus achieving both tangible and intangible return on your investment far outweighing the actual monetary contribution. Your organization will also be recognized as one of your sponsors on our website: www.buildingnewleaders.com.
Please donate directly on the site by visiting http://www.buildingnewleaders.com/donations or Click here to Download Sponsor Form then complete and mail your donation to the address on the form.

Early College Awareness: Closing the Gap
Think College Early
Agenda:
- Good evening and welcome to our 3rd HBCU Tour meeting. I really thank u for taking the time to be here tonight on this dreary day. I know Thanksgiving is next week and you have a lot to do, whether you're traveling or entertaining at home. Therefore, We will adhere to the agenda as close as possible. Hopefully, we'll finish in about an hour. I still encourage you to ask questions if u have any. Please ask them as we move along.
- Mr. Scott, from Poets Athletics Club, is facilitating another HBCU tour meeting tonight @ Chesapeake HS, and couldn't be here with us.
- Tour Itinerary: Most of you are familiar with our itinerary, but in fairness to our new members, I will review the itinerary again. Everyone should have a copy of itinerary. If you don't , raise you hands. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions as we go along.
- By the next meeting, every parent will have a copy of our daily schedule including hotels, tour times, location, meal times, etc. We will adhere to that scheduled as much as possible so that every parent will know where their child is at any given time and what they are doing. You will be provided with Chaperones cell phones numbers. We will make sure that your child has a memorable experience.
- I know there was a lot of confusion about the dress code policy for the tour. In order to alleviate the confusion, we as a team have come up with the following dress code and it is final. The dress policy will be posted on the web site.
- Boys:
- For the Colleges : a polo shirt with khaki pants or jeans (no holes or cuts anywhere in your jeans). Belts must be worn.
